Crossing America at Voyageurs National Park
Students explored the frozen lakes, boreal forests, and dark, star-filled skies of Voyageurs National Park alongside ranger friends.
They learned how people have relied on these waters for generations — from Indigenous communities fishing through the ice to modern winter traditions on frozen lakes. Looking skyward, students explored the northern lights, constellations, and the importance of dark skies, discovering how stories, science, and survival are deeply connected in this northern landscape.
Engineering Design Challenge: Students designed ice-fishing shelters that balanced insulation, stability, sustainability, and tradition — showing how thoughtful design can honor both people and place.
