Preparing for the Acadia National Park LIVESTREAM Experience
Goals:
  1. Familiarize students with the unique marine creatures of the tidepools at Schoodic Peninsula within Acadia National Park.
  2. Equip students with the knowledge to identify and understand the significance of various tidepool inhabitants during the LIVESTREAM event.
  3. Encourage students to create a memorable artifact that helps them recall the tidepool creatures they learn about.
Scenario: Imagine a world where each tidal shift unveils a fascinating realm of marine life – starfish, mussels, barnacles, and more, all within the rocky nooks and crannies of Schoodic Peninsula. As the waves recede, these tiny ecosystems present an awe-inspiring diversity of life. As students prepare for the upcoming virtual LIVESTREAM at Acadia National Park, this hands-on lesson will plunge them into the mesmerizing world of tidepools.
Resources:
  • Pictures or short video clips showcasing tidepool creatures from Schoodic Peninsula.
  • Craft materials: colored paper, markers, glue, scissors, clay, and any other decorative items.
  • Digital device with internet connectivity for attending the LIVESTREAM.
  • Reference books or web links about tidepool ecology.
Call to Action: Dive into the vibrant ecosystems of Acadia National Park's tidepools! Engage with the incredible biodiversity, understand their significance, and create a keepsake that will serve as a gateway to the memories of these intriguing marine inhabitants.

Activities or Engineering Design Challenges:
1. Introduction to Tidepool Inhabitants (30 mins):
  • Showcase the different marine creatures found in the tidepools of Schoodic Peninsula, such as starfish, sea anemones, crabs, mussels, and barnacles.
  • Discuss their unique features, behaviors, and importance in the tidepool ecosystem.

2. Interactive Crafting Session (60 mins):
  • Challenge students to create their own representations of tidepool creatures using craft materials.
  • Students can opt to make 2D sketches or 3D models using clay.
  • Encourage creativity and individual interpretations. For instance, a student might craft a starfish with clay and decorate it with colored markers.
3. Preparation for the LIVESTREAM (20 mins):
  • Discuss the format and schedule of the LIVESTREAM event.
  • Provide students with tips on how to maximize their virtual experience, such as preparing questions in advance or noting down interesting observations during the stream.
4. Tidepool Creature Memory Game (30 mins):
  • Students place their crafted creatures in the center of the classroom.
  • Each student takes a turn describing one feature or fact about a creature, and the others must guess which tidepool inhabitant is being described.
  • This activity reinforces the information learned and prepares students for the LIVESTREAM.
Reflection:
Post-LIVESTREAM Group Discussion (20 mins):
  • After attending the virtual event, gather students for a discussion about their experiences.
  • Ask them to share any new creatures they observed, interesting facts learned, or aspects they found most captivating.
Journaling Activity (15 mins):
  • Students should document their thoughts, feelings, and takeaways from both the preparatory lesson and the LIVESTREAM.
  • Encourage them to reflect on the significance of tidepools in marine ecology and their personal connection to the topic.
Show and Tell (20 mins):
  • Invite students to showcase their tidepool creature crafts and share the inspiration or story behind their creations.
  • Celebrate the diversity of representations and interpretations, emphasizing the importance of individual perspectives in the learning journey.
