Crossing America Visits San Juan National Historic Site
We traveled to San Juan National Historic Site, where students joined Ranger Carlos to explore the massive stone walls and forts that protected Puerto Rico for centuries.
As we learned about the site, Ranger Carlos helped students see how island life shapes everything—from architecture to daily decisions. Together, we explored how communities have adapted to living surrounded by water, facing storms, and building resilience over time. Students thought about what it means to live on an island, where weather, resources, and geography all play a role in how people prepare, protect, and support one another.
Engineering Design Challenge: Students designed and built ideas to help people living on islands stay safe and more comfortable during storms and extreme weather events. Their solutions focused on real needs—protecting homes, managing water, improving shelter, or helping communities recover. Students were challenged to think creatively, test their ideas, and improve their designs with island life in mind.
