Crossing America Goes to Redwood National and State Parks
Students joined our Ranger friends to step into the world of the towering redwoods and the ecosystems they support. Together, we explored ancient forests where trees reach for the sky and life thrives from root to canopy.
We investigated how old-growth forests provide critical habitat, store vast amounts of carbon, and protect biodiversity. Students learned why these forests are so resilient, what threatens them, and how people are working every day to ensure these giants continue to stand for generations to come.
Engineering Design Challenge: Students designed and built structures capable of supporting the height and weight of a model “redwood tree.” Their challenge was to create stability so their structure would not topple under pressure — mirroring how roots, soil, and interconnected ecosystems keep real redwoods standing tall.
