Crossing America Went to Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie
Students stepped into the history of Charleston Harbor alongside ranger friends, exploring how Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie protected the coastline and shaped community life for centuries. They examined how fort design evolved over time and what it takes to protect people and places from both natural and human-made threats.
The experience concluded with an engineering design challenge, where students designed and tested fortification models to withstand wind, water, and impact—thinking carefully about placement, materials, and structure while connecting history to real-world problem-solving.
