"Starry Night Synergy: Astronomy, Ecology, and Artistic Expression
Goals:

  • Students will gain an understanding of the significance of dark skies and their importance in astronomy and the natural world.
  • Students will be able to identify major constellations, stars, and planets visible during February.
  • Students will comprehend how dark skies impact animal behavior and ecosystems.
  • Students will express their appreciation and understanding of dark skies through artistic representations.
Scenario: As the Voyageurs National Park prepares for its Dark Sky Event in February, students embark on a journey to understand the cosmos and the significance of preserving dark skies. Through this immersion, students will experience the wonder of the night sky and realize the importance of dark skies for both humans and wildlife.

Resources:
  • Star maps or mobile apps for star gazing (like Star Walk or SkyView).
  • Telescopes or binoculars.
  • Red flashlights (to preserve night vision).
  • Dark room or planetarium software.
  • Art supplies (paints, colored pencils, paper, etc.).
  • Research papers or articles on the impact of light pollution on animals.
  • Videos or documentaries on constellations and the importance of dark skies.
Call to Action: Students will embark on a series of hands-on activities and challenges that merge astronomy with ecology and art. They will decipher the stars, understand the ecosystems of the night, and artistically portray their celestial visions.
Activities or Engineering Design Challenges:
Star and Planet Identification:
  • Distribute star maps or guide students on using stargazing apps.
  • In a dark environment, guide students to identify major constellations, stars, and planets visible in February.
  • Challenge: Students will locate at least three constellations and one planet, noting their significance or mythology.
Dark Sky's Impact on Animals:
  • Discuss the concept of light pollution.
  • Students will research or watch videos on how light pollution affects various animals, especially nocturnal ones.
  • Challenge: Create a presentation or infographic on their findings.
Dark Sky Art Creation:
  • Reflecting on their learnings and the beauty of the night sky, students will create their own artistic representation of a dark sky.
  • This could be a painting, drawing, or digital art piece.
  • Challenge: Incorporate elements that showcase both the beauty of the cosmos and its significance to the natural world.
Reflection:
  • Group Discussion: Students will discuss their findings and share their artworks, expressing their takeaways from the immersion.
  • Journaling: Each student will maintain a journal during the immersion, noting down their experiences, feelings, and discoveries.
  • Presentations: Students or groups will present on a specific topic, such as a constellation's mythology or the impact of light pollution on a specific animal.
  • Exhibition: Host a mini-exhibition of the students' dark sky art, allowing peers, teachers, and parents to appreciate their works and learn about the importance of preserving dark skies.
